➜ What is a Learning Health Network?
A Learning Health Network is a model of organizational architecture used by peer-to-peer communities of patients, clinicians, and researchers to share and create data and ideas to improve social and clinical outcomes for health conditions.
How did we get to this model? It starts with the problem:
For Patients
Patients are overwhelmed by information they find through searches or social community sites. They want clear, accurate answers from trustworthy sources and the opportunity to highlight issues they need addressed and work hand-in-hand with clinicians and researchers in finding solutions.
For Researchers
Researchers often work in a silo, disconnected from patients and clinicians, relying on a single dimension of accessible data and unable to influence the adoption of their findings in the real world of clinical care.
For Clinicians
Clinicians are challenged to figure out real world implementations of scientific findings while being measured on processes they did not develop and outcomes they only partly control.
The Solution
A proven model that brings these collaborators together to Own the Outcome.
The difference ➜ Collaboration across boundaries
The Learning Health Network model expands upon the Learning Health System to connect individuals across organizational and role based boundaries for open sharing and more robust collaboration.
The Evolution from Learning Health Systems
A Learning Health System is a healthcare system which has committed to continuously analyzing its performance and seeking to improve its systems of delivery to improve the outcomes it delivers to its patients. The concept of the LHS is centered on the healthcare delivery system and is traditionally a characteristic of a single institution or organization, rather than crossing institutional boundaries to promote broader collaboration for improvement. Coined by the Institute of Medicine in 2007, these systems were based on concepts of evidence-based care and traditional large-scale research methods.
